How to Read Reversed Tarot Cards
By Selena (Atelier Tarot) ·
Is an upside-down tarot card bad? Learn four ways to read reversals and why positive and challenging cards reverse differently, with examples.
When a card flips over upside down, many people tense up: “Reversed means bad, right?” Not necessarily. A reversal means the card’s energy hasn’t disappeared—it is flowing in a different form. Here is how to read reversed cards without fear.
Upright
When a card lands right side up, its original energy is expressed smoothly and clearly. The Sun upright shines with success and joy; the Three of Swords upright makes heartache plainly felt.
Four ways to read a reversed card
A reversal doesn’t have one fixed meaning. Depending on the question and the surrounding cards, choose the lens that fits best.
1. Too much or too little energy
The card’s energy is out of balance. The Chariot (drive) reversed can mean so much drive that you lose control—or that your drive has run dry.
2. Delayed or blocked
Things aren’t failing; they’re moving slowly or late. The Eight of Wands (swift progress) reversed can mean news you are waiting for is running a little behind.
3. Turned inward
The energy is circling inside instead of showing outwardly. The Lovers reversed may show a relationship that looks fine on the surface while someone quietly hesitates over a choice.
4. The opposite, or a release
Often used with challenging cards: the difficult energy is weakening or loosening.
Positive cards vs. challenging cards
The easiest rule to remember:
A positive card reversed is a caution; a challenging card reversed is a sign of resolution.
| Card | Upright | Reversed |
|---|---|---|
| The Sun (positive) | success, joy | a passing cloud, too much optimism |
| Ace of Cups (positive) | new love | holding feelings back, a closed heart |
| The Tower (challenging) | sudden collapse | crisis averted, slower change |
| Nine of Swords (challenging) | anxiety, sleeplessness | anxiety easing, the worst is over |
| The Devil (challenging) | attachment, bondage | breaking free, regaining control |
Seen this way, a reversal is often welcome news.
When many cards are reversed
If two or more of three cards are reversed, read the overall picture as a time when things move slowly or when inner sorting comes first. Focus on the advice card more than the outcome—it tells you what to change so the flow turns upright again.

When the cards are shuffled here, about 30% come up reversed—roughly what happens naturally when some cards flip during a physical shuffle. Don’t worry if you draw one; read the reversed meaning on the card’s page. Every card in our tarot card dictionary has upright and reversed meanings for love, money, and health.
Selena says: An upside-down card isn’t saying “wrong”—it’s saying “look from another angle,” just as the Hanged Man sees the world anew by hanging upside down.
